Kathmandu’s Top Tourist Attractions

  • Swayambhunath Stupa: This iconic Buddhist temple, also known as the Monkey Temple, is a must-visit attraction in Kathmandu. With its stunning architecture and sweeping views of the city, it’s a favorite spot for travelers and locals alike. Don’t forget to bring some peanuts to feed the cheeky monkeys.
  • Pashupatinath Temple: As one of the most sacred Hindu temples in the world, Pashupatinath is a must-visit attraction for anyone interested in spirituality and culture. With its intricate carvings and colorful architecture, the temple is a feast for the eyes. And if you’re lucky, you might even witness one of the daily cremations that take place along the banks of the Bagmati River.
  • Durbar Square: This historic square in the heart of Kathmandu is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a must-visit destination for history buffs. With its ancient palaces, temples, and monuments, Durbar Square is a living museum of Nepalese culture and architecture. And if you visit during one of the many festivals that take place here throughout the year, you’ll be treated to a vibrant display of traditional music, dance, and costumes.
  • Boudhanath Stupa: This massive Buddhist stupa, located in the eastern part of Kathmandu, is one of the largest in the world. With its striking white dome and colorful prayer flags, it’s a sight to behold. And if you’re looking for a more immersive experience, consider staying in one of the many guest houses that surround the stupa.
  • Thamel: This bustling neighborhood in the heart of Kathmandu is a favorite among travelers and backpackers. With its lively streets, colorful shops, and endless food options, Thamel is the perfect place to soak up the energy and vibrancy of the city. And if you’re looking for a unique souvenir to take home, you’ll find plenty of options here, from handmade crafts to traditional clothing.

When to Travel to Nepal

The best time to travel to Kathmandu, Nepal, is during the spring and autumn seasons. Spring, from March to May, offers mild temperatures, clear skies, and blooming rhododendrons, creating a picturesque backdrop for exploring the city and trekking in the surrounding Himalayas. Autumn, from September to November, brings pleasant weather, with warm days and cool evenings, making it another ideal time to visit. During these seasons, the skies are generally clear, providing excellent visibility of the stunning mountain peaks. It’s important to note that Kathmandu experiences monsoon rains from June to August, which can disrupt travel plans and limit outdoor activities. By planning your visit during the spring or autumn, you can make the most of Kathmandu’s favorable weather conditions and enjoy the rich cultural heritage and natural beauty that the city has to offer.

Access Nepal

Hotels. The highest concentration of hotels can be found in the tourist district of Thamel and the surrounding areas of Jhatha and Chhetrapati. You can rent a double room in a budget guesthouse with cardboard partitions, noisy neighbors, and a shared toilet for 660 NPR ($5). Alternatively, you can rent a hotel room with a three-star rating and air conditioning for 1500 NPR ($12).

Local cuisine. When you arrive in Kathmandu, it’s a must to try the dishes of the local Newar cuisine. They differ slightly from most Nepalese dishes with their spiciness. You can start your culinary exploration with the national dish called dal bhat. The highest concentration of eateries is found in the tourist hub of Thamel. The prices are pleasantly surprising. A dinner in a good restaurant with moderate alcohol will cost you only 1100 NPR ($8) per person. This is despite the steep 23% markup on the price. The average bill for lunch at a cafe is 500 NPR ($4), and it’s half the price in a street eatery.

Safety. When visiting historical landmarks, don’t lose sight of what’s happening around you. Nepal has many monkeys, and they can snatch anything they like from your hands, especially if it’s something edible.
